A student studying at the University of Baghdad, originally from the holy city of Karbala, asks about the ruling on his fasting and prayer: 1. He travels to Baghdad two days a week only and stays there until after zawāl (midday), but does not spend the night in Baghdad. 2. He has been doing this regularly since the academic year began in the tenth month, with a two-month break. Should he fast or break his fast?
Answer
In the name of Allah, know, my son, that you must fast and perform full prayers (tamām) at your university because it is your place of study. Likewise, in your hometown, you pray full and fast. If you pray while on the road, you must shorten your prayer (qasr). And if zawāl occurs while you are still traveling and you are fasting, then you must make up that day’s fast later. Allah knows best.
