Your Eminence, the Grand Religious Authority, Ayatollah Sheikh Bashir Al-NajafY (may Allah prolong his life), Q. What is the ruling of a candidate for Parliament who spends money in order to buy votes? What is the ruling of voters who take money for selling their votes? Group of believers
Answer
In the name of Allah, it is forbidden for the candidate to use public and private money to buy votes. It is also forbidden for voters to sell their votes, as one’s vote is in his hands. Selling votes spreads corruption in the government. If one of the citizens is afflicted by taking money, he does not have to fulfill what he promised the candidate with. Allah knows best.
