I was unable to complete my fasting during the past year due to illness. What is the expiation (kaffarah) or compensation (fidyah) for that?
Answer
In the name of Allah, you are obligated to make up for those missed fasts if you are physically capable. If you are unable to make up for them by the arrival of the next Ramadan, then you should give compensation (fidyah) of three-quarters of a kilogram of food for each missed day. Allah knows best.

I want to know what is the atonement for a person who breaks the fast because he does not feel well and drinks water at around 2 pm. What is the atonement or punishment for this?
Answer
In the name of Allah, if he is unable to perform fasting, he has to perform a missed fasting later and there is no atonement on him. If he is able to fast even if it is with difficulty which is endurable, he has to perform a missed fasting and atone for that in addition to abstaining from the fasting invalidators for the rest of the day. The atonement for the deliberate breaking the fast is of two options: fasting two consequent months and manumit a person or feeding sixty poor people. Allah is the Guide and Knowing.

Do we have to perform qadhaa fast for other than Ramadhan days, like a day vowed to be fasted and the like?
Answer
In the name of Allah, if you have not fasted that specific vowed day, you have to pay atonement, but you do not have to perform qadhaa fast. Nevertheless, if you fast and spoiled it by having an intercourse, you have to perform qadhaa fast and pay atonement. The atonement is either to free a slave, fast two consecutive days or feed sixty needy. Allah knows best.
