I was asked about the meaning of the hadith: "Love of Ali is a virtue with which no sin harms, and hatred of him is a sin with which no virtue benefits." I answered that this hadith is mentioned in the books of both Sunni and Shia schools, such as Manaqib by al-Khwarazmi al-Hanafi and others. It has been interpreted in several ways, among them: Loving Ali motivates a person to follow him in his character, conduct, piety, and faith—so much so that his goodness outweighs his sins, as if he has no sins at all. Conversely, hating Ali pushes a person away from following his character and piety—so that his evil outweighs any good, as if he has no goodness at all. This understanding is also derived from the narration of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): "If the people had united upon the love of Ali ibn Abi Talib, Allah would not have created the Fire (Hell)." Is this interpretation I gave of the noble hadith incorrect or unacceptable?
