We know that completing the recommended fast is not obligatory, but the question is: If a person does not want to fast the entire day but intends to fast only part of the day for any reason, where the fasting is recommended (such as on the Day of Arafah, or the 17th of Rabi' al-Awwal, or any other day when fasting is recommended), does fasting with the intention of an incomplete fast have any reward? Is deliberately fasting partially on a recommended day better than not fasting at all?
Answer
In the name of Allah, it is not correct for a person to intend a partial fast for the day. Rather, they must intend to fast and abstain from the things that break the fast for the entire day. However, if a hindrance arises preventing completion, they may break the fast, and it may even become obligatory. Allah knows best.
