1. If a man's watch strap is made of gold, is it permissible for him to wear it and perform prayers while wearing it? 2. If the watch itself is not made of gold but is decorated with gold—for example, only the hands or the button (knobs) or pushers are gold—is it permissible for a man to wear it and pray while wearing it? 3. What is the ruling if the watch has only been gold-plated? 4. Can a man wear a watch whose engine is made of gold but is not visible?
Answer
1. It is not permissible to wear it, and any prayer performed while wearing it is invalid. 2. Wearing such a watch is problematic (i.e., not permissible as a matter of obligatory precaution), although the prayer performed while wearing it is not invalid. 3. If it is merely gold-colored or gold-painted, and there is no actual layer of gold on its surface—even a very thin one—there is no problem. 4. There is no problem with wearing it.
