If a person cannot determine which jurist (faqih) is the most knowledgeable (aʿlam), and believes that three or four jurists are of the same level of aʿlamiyyah, is it permissible to follow (perform tabʿīḍ) all of them in different matters?
Answer
In the name of Allah, it is obligatory to follow the most knowledgeable (aʿlam) among the living jurists. And the aʿlam can only be one. However, if it is proven that one jurist is more knowledgeable in a particular section of jurisprudence and another is more knowledgeable in a different section, then each one should be followed in the area in which he is aʿlam. That said, such a situation is very rare, and perhaps it has never actually occurred. Allah knows best.
